If you are like us you want Rockport to retain the character of what Charles Kuralt called the most “perfect small harbor in America.” Unfortunately, that is not always easy. Despite the success of the citizens’ initiatives in the 2020 town meeting limiting the size of each downtown hotel and requiring a traffic and safety study for any such development, we still face the likelihood of an oversized “boutique hotel” spanning the open space from 18 Central Oyster Bar & Grill to Seafolk Coffee. That is why we are supporting the citizen’s appeal of the Planning Board approval of this project.

Even though the appeal is being run ‘on a shoestring’ it is still an expensive process to go through the Zoning Board of Appeals and perhaps on to the District Court, if needed. Either way, it is a large burden and even the smallest donation can help ensure compliance with the town ordinances – new and old. This includes preservation of scenic views from the Shepherd Block, Central Street and Goodrich Park, conformity of architecture with neighboring structures (lights, balconies, and window styles), a parking and safety study, and more.
