Rockport Recreation Day, Saturday, June 18

Please share with others and bring your friends and family to explore the diverse recreational opportunities at Rockport State Recreation Area! The day starts with a Nature Walk at Besser Natural Area at 8 am. At 10 am, Rockport Harbor is the place to be. The Mountain Bike Safari to the Sinkholes starts at 10:30 am. Our special featured event this year is a live Birds of Prey program starting at 12:30 pm. A fossil hunt in Rockport Quarry begins at 1:30 pm. All tours and the fossil hunt are lead by very knowledgeable guides to point out features you won't want to miss. There will be a fishing program and a scavenger hunt that will be great adventures for kids to participate in!

Be sure to bring your appetite! Thumper's Roadside BBQ will be there with yummy, slow roasted BBQ “sammiches”, nachos and coleslaw for your lunchtime eating enjoyment and to fuel you up for the day's activities.

Dark Sky Celebration at Besser Museum's Log Cabin Day, June 25

In addition to the Museum's usual Log Cabin Day activities, there will be special programming and displays to celebrate the Michigan Dark Sky Preserve status that was signed in earlier this year for Rockport State Recreation Area, Negwegon and Thompson's Harbor State Parks. Mary Stewart Adams will be joining us from the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Emmet County for Dark Sky programming throughout the day. She will give you interesting and entertaining insights into the importance of dark skies from ancient times to the present. The Friends of the parks will have a special display area.

XTERRA Rockport Rugged Triathlon Plus

We could very easily write pages about this event – and we have. With our assistance, Mary Beth Stutzman has been creating pages of promotional materials for this event to describe what it is, where it is and materials to raise sponsorship money to cover it's costs. This event is being promoted around the world through 3Disciplines and XTERRA. Go to http://3disciplines.com/event/?x=24&y=1 to look up the race details. Note that there are several race options besides the main triathlon.

Our supervisor- Blake Gingrich, Casey Stutzman-Performance Locker, Kenny Krell and his team from 3D met out at Rockport over a week ago to work on the race course layout for this event. It was Krell's first extensive look at the property. He was very impressed with the terrain and excited about it's potential to provide a significant challenge to XTERRA racers. He kept talking about how this could become a regional qualifier for XTERRA National Competition. We can't wait to see how this event will be received by the participants to see if this is a possibility.
